Total Eclipse in Europe

Total eclipse on August 11th 1999 -

I was there! And I´m pretty happy about that because it was incredible! Of course I knew what was going to happen as anybody else but to see this event live and with my very own eyes and not on some pics on TV or paper is just beyond comprehension. I have been waiting for it for 5 years since I got to knew about.
If you are not impressed by such an event by what else then?
As far as I concerned, this was not my last eclipse!

We - my relatives and friends who went with me to the south of Germany - were all concerned about the weather for there were clouds over the whole country. The sun was to observe just in very few areas and even we could not see it through the clouds. But just in those 2 minutes of totality, there was a hole. ;-)

The pictures below are placed in chronological order.

Here´s a map that shows where and when the total eclipse was to be seen in Europe.

Eclipse I

The beginning. First contact was at 11:15 h am. This pictures was taken about 20 minutes later.

22.425 kilobytes

Eclipse II

The sun at approximately 11:50 h am.

40.706 kilobytes

The Landscape I

The landscape a couple of minutes later, its getting darker and colder. Everything has strange shadows and color, kind of grey and yellow.
We were completely alone, somewhere between Saarbrücken and Saarlouis, Germany, next to a village named Nohn.

42.583 kilobytes The Landscape II

The same place, the opposite direction, shortly before totality. The birds stop singing.

29.605 kilobytes Eclipse III

The sun at 12:20 h, 10 minutes before total eclipse.
Unfortunately, I could not take a shot of the sun completely covered by the moon or the landscape because it was too dark. :-(
We could see the sunlight breaking through the moon´s craters - a phenomenon called "Perlschnur" or "Diamantring" ("diamond ring") - and red eruptions.

89.928 kilobytes The Landscape III

The area at the same time with me watching the sun through those special glasses - "thanks" to the clouds we did not need to make use of it very often.
